Sod Types

St. Augustine Grass
St. Augustine grass is ideal for New Orleans. It is shade and traffic tolerant and very aggressive, so it is perfect for establishing new lawns or for filling damaged areas. Jefferson Feed offers three choices for St. Augustine sod: Florida, Louisiana and Alabama.

The Florida variety is grown in a rich, black top soil base and is especially green in the early spring months.

The Louisiana variety is grown here in our state and is acclimated to our climate.

The Alabama variety is grown in a red clay base.

The Florida and Louisiana varieties of St. Augustine grass are grown in black soil as opposed to red clay, which is commonly used in other lines. These soil-based grasses hold water better, which encourages quicker rooting. These varieties also hold nutrients better which lends itself to faster-establishing lawns. Because of these factors, these varieties have been found to be lower maintenance and require less watering.

Centipede Grass
Centipede grass has a finer texture, is slow growing and is shade tolerant. It is a warm-season, dark green grass and has excellent heat tolerance. It tolerates heavy traffic very well and will recover quickly from injury. This grass works well in residential and commercial landscapes and is extensively used in golf courses, sport fields, parks and recreation areas.

Bermuda Grass
Bermuda Grass is used on golf courses, playgrounds and the Saints playing field. It is a full sun only variety and is dormant in the winter. It requires very frequent mowing to give a turflike appearance and is usually overseeded with Winter Rye for a green look in the winter.
